Morning folks!

This Monday I am sharing with you some truly amazing headwear by The Libertarian. She is a sculptural genious when it comes to creating fantastic pieces as headwear and for any occasion. Designer, maker and founder of The Libertarian, Jayne Elwell, has an aim with her business;

"To provide an imaginative and original alternative to the high street, so that customers can find individual designs that have been made to a high standard and haven't been massed produced."

She goes on to state that she wants to "bring freedom to fashion. I don’t want fashion to dictate, I want fashion to celebrate." I think this is an amzing approach to the fashion industry where originality and a certain amount of rebellion can create amazing design! I'm certainly a fan!

Today I'd like to feature a beautiful collection designed by Studio Seed. Tamsin is the talented designer behind the brand and her speciality is illustration & wedding stationery. Studio Seed takes on a number of design & creative work from freelancing for high street retailers through to brand design. I'm a big fan of the wedding ranges & I just adore her new collection.

"A pretty, modern vintage wedding collection including 'Save the Date' postcards and Daytime and Evening Wedding Invitations. The couple had lots of lovely ideas for their wedding stationery and we used details from the day including the lovely eau de nil colour which the bridesmaids will be wearing".

After we completed an amazing module one for the surface pattern e-course we are thrilled and honoured to share a selection of work from our very hard working & talented class.

We are very lucky to have such a wonderful group from around the world! In the class we have students from 28 countries with 5 continents represented. We have been amazed by the dedication & enthusiasm from our students & feel truly blessed. I can't thank the students & contributors enough for their wonderful support & contribution.

Throughout the course we encourage our students to participate in design competitions. One key competition that we promoted was the 'Christmas Surface Pattern Design' competition for the lovely Tigerprint design studio. We are pleased to announce that two of students were selected as runners up. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to 'Tammie' & 'Suzyspellbound'.

We are also thrilled to have the wonderful Tigerprint as one of our e-course contributors.

Hello everyone! Today I would like to recommend the lovely book Paper + Craft. Its name says it all, it's basically a collection of 25 charming ideas of things to do with paper. Created by Minhee and Truman Cho, founders of the charming stationary company Paper + Cup.
From a giant flower to a cone wreath, a custom silhouette or a keepsake paper box, page by page you will learn how to make some amazing crafts.

For my feature today I am posting some quirky inspiration in the form of Lucie Ellen's work, which you can find at Etsy. If you're not sure what Etsy is I recommend you go check it out, there are some wonderful pieces on there that you can gain inspiration from or actually buy!

Lucie Ellen's work is cute, fun and of course quirky, consisting of a collection of brooches and necklaces based on vintage themes and patterns. Adding to their quirky characteristics, her pieces are made from an unusual material...wood. According to her Esty page, Lucie works from a shed in her garden, 'creating "lovely things to wear and use" from reclaimed wood and recycled broken vintage china.' Go Lucie!

Today I wanted to feature a fantastic new business & e-course set up by two very inspiring ladies... Award winning entrepreneur Beth Nicholls & super talented mixed media artist Kelly Rae Roberts.

Happy New Year & happy 2012!

I hope you all had a wonderful break & are ready to begin the new year! I really had a roller coaster ride in 2011... I skydived solo, got engaged in Las Vegas, became an Auntie again, shook Elton John's hand, met design icon Zandra Rhodes, was a bridesmaid for the 1st time, fell in love with teaching, built a design studio, appeared on TV, freelanced for some uber cool clients, expanded my design label, started a new e-course & joint business, began to love writing, licensed my designs internationally & changed my hair from brunette to blonde... Phew!!! Busy year!
I love the unknown... I'm very excited to see what 2012 brings!? Here are a selection of inspiring words to kick start your 2012! What do you have planned? Or do you thrive off spontaneity!?

I first met Christine & Xander at the wonderful 'Do What You Love' retreat back in May 2011. I was really impressed by their fun & quirky approach & general loveliness. I'm super happy to announce that I've also booked them to work their magic with some of my design products too! (launching in 2012)

Tord Boontje

Today I am sharing some of the fantastic work by Tord Boontje. He creates contemporary laser cut designs for a variety of outcomes; from build-it-youself light fixtures (sold in Habitat), branch-like chandeliers, curtains and screens, rugs and chairs (the list goes on!). Boonjte has also made many beautiful installations, one of which I have featured below. 'Happy Ever After' much like the majority of his work, was inspired by the idea of nature and technology coming together. He cuts wool and silk to create an organic atmosphere, and designs his chairs as if they were characters from a story. Design Preview

I was recently invited to attend my a design show called 'Half Way There' at 'The University of Leeds'. It was a great event showcasing work from rising young talent as they met their mid year deadlines. It was great to get a sneak peek at the work from the graphics, fashion, textiles & surface pattern design students. I loved visiting the design school (as I'm a former student) & it was lovely to catch up with students that I've had in on work experience also. I lectured at the uni last year & I'm looking forward to returning in 2012.

I attended the event with my colleague Beth Nicholls it was inspiring for us to see and really relevant to our surface pattern e-course. We were really impressed by the work, the unique ideas coming through along with a lot of strong commercial pieces too.

The company 'Hello Lucky' based in San francisco and London create fabulous invitations, letterpress and stationary including these wonderfully Christmassy greetings cards. Happy Friday everyone!

We all know that Friday is the best day of the week ... excitement for the night out ahead, sleeping until midday on Saturday and a Sunday roast that causes you to sink into the couch and stay there all afternoon. But why can't this happiness always carry on into the week ahead? Doom and gloom can quickly set in which can cause a downhill spiral of worry, and claiming back the Friday feeling can seem like the hardest thing in the world.

Sometimes all you need is a positive attitude and you can easily turn your day around. If something is getting you down think about the things that make you happy and remember how great life really is!

Today is a little one off post to show you my new range of recently developed tea towels. I've just signed off my samples, the full collection will be available from the end of January 2012!

The new signature range consists of six contemporary designs: 'Layered Shapes', 'Scribble Shells', '50's Inspired', 'Quirky Stems', 'Floral Sprigs' & 'Textured Honesty'.

*The other designs shown below in various single colours are from my existing 'Cow Parsley & 'Etched Floral' kitchen textile ranges.

Captivating Colour

Hello, I'm Abi! As the days are being taken over by a dull, grey sky, I felt the need to share some wonderful images of captivating colours that are sure to brighten up your day!

Tropical pinks, reds and oranges with deep sea blues and greens always catch my eye and remind me of hot summer days abroad. I love how the use of colour can cause anything to become unique and exciting. The images below from Pinterest show just how the use of colour can change a subject matter, create a certain mood and provoke particular thoughts and feelings.
So next time you go to pull on your black jeans and black jumper, choose a hot pink knit instead with a bright blue scarf and brighten up these grey, wintery days!

Hello, finally Friday! Inspired by trees and nature, this is the latest work of jewellery designer Clara Piedrahita (who also happens to be my wonderful and very inspiring aunt).

These fantastic miniature trees have all been created with different stones, minerals, gold, silver and a number of natural seeds and leaves. Presented as decorative pieces, these gorgeous trees can also be worn as broaches. I love the different textures and surfaces that come together to create a specific shape. What do you think? You know how when you spot something you like, you suddenly start seeing it everywhere you go? Last year I discovered and fell in love with paper sculptures made with old books and since then I have been finding the most amazing "paper artists".
Today I would like to introduce Su Blackwell. This artist/art director works mainly with paper and i have to say I am completely mesmerised by her work. Inkling

Technology now a days is amazing! Sometimes though, it seems to hold us back from using our very own incredible tool, our hands.
Wacom has created a fantastic gadget to combine hand sketching and computer technology. The Inkling allows you to draw on paper and then translate this to your computer to be digitally altered. Hey Everyone! Another one of the best parts of New York City is the shopping. I loved my trip to the MoMA (Museum Of Modern Art)! I love being surrounded by creativity and such iconic art. I also love the shop at the museum. So many innovative things with beautiful design. I got the most amazing book there which now sits on my dining room table for everlasting spring inside my home. Today I'd like to share with you the uber cool work from highly talented illustrator Chris Piascik. I first came across his gorgeous typography & illustrations via pinterest. I can literally spend hours on his website as it's jam packed with so much fun stuff, it really is an amazing online portfolio.

"An artist who recently held his sixth solo exhibition, Chris Piascik is also active in the design community. With 6 years of professional experience at award-winning firms in New England, he is currently working as a freelance designer and illustrator. He has been fascinated with design since he discovered his parent’s music collection at a young age. It was his first exposure to design, and it was only a matter of time before he began remixing the album packaging to better suit what he was hearing. I first met the lovely Tamsin a few years ago when we worked together at Tigerprint, she has a beautiful elegant and recognizable style. I'm a huge fan of her fashion illustration pieces.

Currently based in the West Midlands, Tamsin works from her studio & has over 6 years experience designing beautiful products which grace the hearts and homes of all who receive it. Outside of the creative world Tamsin enjoys many other passions and pursuits: a big fan of Formula One she also enjoys baking cupcakes and pretending to be the 6th member of Girls Aloud!

Happy Monday folks!

To brighten up an otherwise dreary Monday here is some scrumptious illustration from the designer and illustrator Nomoco. Nomoco is a Japanese born illustrator currently residing in London and has exhibited internationally with her wonderful, unique illustration style. Her work exhibits experimentation with contrast, bright popping colours, linear lines and font, with her inspiration taken directly from nature. There is an almost whimsical nature to her illustrations that draw a viewer in and leave an emotional impact.

Juliette Crane

Today I'd like to introduce to you all the wonderful work from the talented artist Juliette Crane. I first met the lovely Juliette back in May at the amazing Do What You Love art and creative enterprise retreat.

Juliette has been very busy indeed, she's a launched number of beautiful products along with running a fabulous new How to Paint an Owl e-course (The next session starts on Oct 24th)

"I've always loved creating and imagining wild and beautiful things exist in our everyday world. But I never, ever thought I could make my way as an artist. Then in the summer of 2009 my sister-in-law gifted me with a few fabulous vintage wallpaper books. I was astounded by the colors and patterns and knew I had to do something with the gorgeous paper. So, I remembered what I loved most as a kid-cutting out outfits for characters and making up their stories. And that's what started all of these whimsical paintings. I love mixing all sorts of materials in my work-acrylics, spray paint, pastels, origami paper, glitter, vintage sheet music and wallpaper.
Whenever I create things it makes me happy and my hope is that when you see the things I create, you feel that happiness too. And maybe even uncover your own inspiration and passion. And share it with the world".

Juliette has so many wonderful new products that I'd love to feature (I will share these on a follow up blog post this week) from calendars through to phone cases & limited edition lockets.
